A single AI answer rarely names more than three brands
Every audit panel we run tracks a target brand plus up to five named competitors: six names total per category. Across 6,616 real buyer-intent responses in three B2B SaaS categories, the average response named 2.9 of those six. Only 0.3% named all six. Even in a category we already know has more brands than that, a single answer has room for a handful.
What we counted
Each CitedWell audit panel is configured with a target brand and up to five named competitors for its category, six tracked names in total. When we score a response, we check it for each of those six names and count how many appear. That count is what this post measures: not the full universe of brands a category contains, but how many of a known, relevant set show up in one answer.
We pulled every real, search-grounded response behind our 270 live audit panels (project management, customer support, and HR software; ChatGPT with web search, Gemini with grounding, Perplexity Sonar, and Claude with web search), excluded branded prompts that name the brand directly, and counted tracked-brand mentions per response using the same matching logic our audits use to score a client. That left 6,616 organic, buyer-intent responses to measure.
The distribution
| Brands named (of 6 tracked) | Responses | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 488 | 7.4% |
| 1 | 381 | 5.8% |
| 2 | 1,119 | 16.9% |
| 3 | 2,531 | 38.3% |
| 4 | 1,685 | 25.5% |
| 5 | 393 | 5.9% |
| 6 | 19 | 0.3% |
Three is the most common count. Together, three and four brands account for 64% of all responses. Naming zero of the six tracked brands is more common (7.4%) than naming all six (0.3%). An AI answer to a plain buyer-intent question is a short list, not a directory.
The ceiling moves by category
Project management software is the most crowded of the three categories we track, and it shows in the count. HR software and customer support software have more room per response.
| Category | Organic responses | Avg brands named (of 6) | Ever named all 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project management software | 4,265 | 2.53 | 0 times |
| HR software | 912 | 3.09 | 0 times |
| Customer support software | 1,439 | 3.77 | 19 times (1.3%) |
Project management software never named all six tracked brands in a single response across 4,265 organic responses we measured, and only twice named five. Customer support software, the least crowded of the three, is the only category where an answer ever listed the target brand and all five named competitors together, and even there it happened in just 1.3% of responses.
Why this matters more than a bigger list
A brand deciding where to focus AI visibility work sometimes reasons in terms of a long competitor list: fifteen tools in the category, twenty review sites, a dozen possible angles. The response itself does not have room for that. On average, a single answer names three of the six names we consider directly relevant to a given brand's competitive set, in the crowded category, closer to two and a half. Getting from zero mentions to one is not competing against fifteen brands for one of fifteen slots. It is competing for one of roughly three slots that appear in any given answer, against whichever names are already occupying them.
That reframes the fix. The question is not "how do we get into the conversation," in the abstract. It is "which of the two or three names currently filling this specific slot can be displaced, and on which sources." An AI visibility audit shows which of the six tracked names occupy your category's slots today and how consistently, so the target is a specific competitor and a specific source, not a crowded field.
See how many of the names in your category actually make it into an answer, and which ones.

Data drawn from 270 live, search-grounded audit panels (173 project management, 58 customer support, 39 HR software brands), each a 10-prompt panel run across four AI engines: ChatGPT with web search, Gemini with grounding, Perplexity Sonar, and Claude with web search. We re-scored every successful (non-error) response using CitedWell's production scoring logic, counted how many of the panel's six tracked names (target brand plus five named competitors) were matched per response, and excluded branded prompts (those naming the brand directly) to isolate organic, buyer-intent queries: 6,616 responses. No development-rail or fixture data is included; all responses came from live engine calls. Data collected June-July 2026.
